Profile PictureTim Ballard Creations

Tim is a visual storyteller based in Western North Carolina. With over a decade in the documentary film and educational media industries, his work as video editor, illustrator, and animator has been featured on NPR, CBS, CNN, HBO, Hulu, Netflix, and PBS and has been selected for festivals including the San Francisco Independent Film Festival and The Experimental Film & Music Video Festival in Toronto, Canada. After studying Documentary Film at The New School in New York, Tim pursued studies in sequential narrative and animation at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) and recently completed the Graphic Novel Development Intensive through the Sequential Artists Workshop (SAW). Tim’s unique approach to visual storytelling merges a deep reverence for nature with immersion in the imaginary. Drawing stylistic inspiration from medieval art, woodcuts, book arts, independent comics, and natural history illustrations, he prefers the irregularity and organic texture of hand-drawn lines over digital perfection. Through his illustrated narratives, Tim explores the boundaries between apparent dualities such as human/non-human, civilization/wilderness, and dream/reality. Through delving into themes of ethnobotany, history, or the supernatural, he invites audiences on imaginative journeys that traverse worlds both familiar and fantastical. Over the 10+ years, his work in animation, film, and illustration has ranged from directing squid monsters in New York City subway stations to creating illustrations and animations for a Danish article on biodiversity loss. Tim’s current projects center on ethnobotanical history, conservation, nature-based illustration, multidimensional-post-apocalyptic storytelling, and his beloved vegetable garden.
